MWC 2015: Nokia Networks to expand Cloud business

Telecom network vendor Nokia Networks today said it will ship Nokia Cloud Security Director in Q3 2015, Cloud Security Director in Q4 and Cloud EPC in Q2 2015.

All these enhancements will be displayed at the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2015) in Barcelona in March.

Nokia Cloud Security Director, its telecom architecture for cloud-based radio access networks, will boost virtualized network functions like EPC and VoLTE.

Nokia Radio Cloud enables telecom operators to allocate processing capacity from almost anywhere in the network — adjacent cell or a centralized data center. The multi-layer approach supports distributed and centralized deployments, or a combination of both, using multiple fronthaul types, including Ethernet.

The benefit to telecom operator include elimination of incremental costs to build new infrastructure as it utilizes an operator’s existing radio access and transport asset efficiently.

Nokia Cloud Security Director features multi-vendor capabilities that allow the operator’s security administrator to automatically deploy security policies and functions in cloud and hybrid networks and telecoms can save operational costs.

Nokia Radio Cloud, based on an open ecosystem to maximize the use of open source software, will be commercialized from early 2016 onwards.

“Through Radio Cloud, we expect to see more intelligence implemented in telecommunications networks and innovations in value-centered networks,” said Jin-hyo Park, senior vice president and head of Network Technology R&D Center, SK Telecom.

Since 20 percent of a typical radio access network’s total capacity is used at any one time, telecoms can utilize Nokia Radio Cloud – that separates coverage from capacity – to allocate peak hour capacity needed to use capacity in a better way.
