MWC 2014: Alcatel-Lucent in NFV, virtualized RAN deal with Intel

At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2014, Barcelona, Alcatel-Lucent today said that it is expanding its association with Intel for new Cloud initiatives.

The objective of the Cloud deal with Intel is to assist telecom operators to develop new products and services for consumers and business customers with cloud technologies.

Alcatel-Lucent said major areas such as Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), virtualized Radio Access Networks (RAN) portfolio, CloudBand NFV platform, virtualized IP/MPLS functions, etc. will gain momentum.

The cloud solution will enable telecom operators to use general purpose platforms in configurations that will reduce TCO and increase operators’ ability to scale networks to satisfy mobile data demand with rapidly changing devices and applications.

Cloud Platform, developing and optimizing Alcatel-Lucent’s CloudBand NFV platform including joint contributions to the Open source community and a push to accelerate service provider testing, validation and deployment of NFV technology and products.

“There are billions of devices and machines making up the Internet of Things that will connect to the network in the next few years consuming increasing amounts of bandwidth and network resources. However, the current economics and lack of flexibility in telecom networks is unsustainable,” said Renee James, president of Intel.

Intel is also announcing mobile initiatives on Monday.

Michel Combes, CEO, Alcatel-Lucent, said: “As we outlined in The Shift Plan, it is critical that we lead that change by working with the best and brightest partners who can break down the barriers between IT and networking.”
