Huawei retains lead in microwave transmission market

Huawei has retained its leading position in the global microwave transmission market in the second quarter of 2019, according to a report from Dell’Oro Group.

The development assumes significance because Huawei was placed on a U.S. Entity List, restricting U.S. companies from selling certain components to Huawei and its subsidiaries, in May 2019.

Huawei, the number one telecom equipment maker, gained an additional 2 percentage points of share in microwave transmission market compared to last year.
Ericsson and Nokia are the other leading players in the worldwide microwave transmission market.

The report said the global microwave transmission market declined 4 percent year-over-year in the first half of 2019 due to reduced demand in India. The main telecom operators in India include Bharti Airtel, BSNL, Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio.

“Although we expected the microwave transmission equipment market to contract this year, we were surprised by the magnitude of decline in India,” said Jimmy Yu, vice president at Dell’Oro Group.

Microwave revenue in India declined 70 percent in the first half of 2019. The world market for microwave transmission, excluding India, grew at a very healthy rate of 10 percent in the first half of 2019.
