HFCL MD Mahendra Nahata on investment and innovation

Indian telecom equipment maker HFCL has invested nearly Rs 400 crore over the past 2-3 years to enhance its manufacturing capacity.

HFCL has made investment in its Hyderabad facility to manufacture fiber and FTTH cables. HFCL has also increased its Capex spending in Goa, Chennai and other locations for enhancing capacities and to improve supply chain for better margins.

HFCL’s FTTH cable production facility at Hyderabad commenced production in December, 2020. HFCL has become the largest manufacturer of FTTH cables in India with a capacity of 6 lakh kms per annum. HFCL will be enhancing optical fibre cable (OFC) production, including Fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) cables, by nearly 30 percent in the next 6 months.

HFCL’s capacity for manufacturing Optical FiberCable (OFC) is nearly 20 million fkm per annum from its manufacturing facilities based out of Goa, Chennai and Hyderabad.

Innovation

HFCL said it will be investing nearly Rs 125 crore for R&D activities.

HFCL’s focus has always been on innovation and to offer specialized solutions. These products & services get deployed towards varied applications in telecom, defence, railways, utilities and security surveillance networks.

HFCL has two centres of excellence at Gurgaon and Bangalore to spearhead in-house R&D activities. Its innovation efforts are supported by few other invested R&D houses and collaborators from India and abroad.

HFCL’s innovation pipeline includes electronic fuses, electro optic devices, software defined radios, routers, intelligent antenna systems and ground surveillance radars, among others.

“Our innovation has yielded superior Wi-Fi network products, high capacity radio relay, microwave radios, switches and cloud based management platform, video management system,” Mahendra Nahata, managing director at HFCL, said.

Employee focus

HFCL has taken initiatives towards employee growth and retention.

Spark Program – the flagship HR program of HFCL, which started in 2017 to infuse young minds into the system. The objective of this program is to create a pool of employees who can become the future leaders of HFCL.

HFCL monitors the performance and contributions of Graduate Engineering Trainees and Management Trainees who have been handpicked from prestigious management and engineering institutions of the country, by way of frequent performance feedbacks, they are given specific training to hone their skills to further augment their performance to higher levels.

To continuously motivate and retain deserving employees, steps have been taken to optimise the salaries and launch short/long term incentive schemes and ESOPs to further enhance the levels of ownership and commitment within the organization.

HFCL undertakes specific initiatives, such as, interactive sessions and Coffee session with BU / Functions Head and also with our Managing Director.  Reward & Recognition program (Pat on the back, Pinnacle performer (for individuals) award & Alliance Award (for teams). Virtual Town hall, birthday greetings with desk decoration, daily mailer on thought of the day, festival celebrations (Diwali Fiesta & Secret Santa) etc.

HFCL is aiming to grow its revenue from products business both, in India and abroad by providing technological solution with its competitive capabilities for diverse and expanded customer base. HFCL is looking to increase its revenue from its own designed products giving higher profitability margins, while improving its working capital cycle.
