Ericsson in VoLTE network deal with Telefonica Germany

Ericsson on Tuesday announced its network deal to supply VoLTE telecom equipment to Telefonica Germany.

Telefonica is one of the first operators in Europe to complete the upgrade of 4G network to be ready for commercial VoLTE launch. Telefonica has already deployed VoLTE in areas where Telefonica has LTE coverage in Germany.

The European telecom operator will launch VoLTE commercially once Telefonica has secured the full VoLTE device eco-system for mass-market launch.

Telefonica’s proposed VoLTE will be supported by Ericsson’s Single Radio Voice Call Continuity (SRVCC) technology that enables seamless handover of ongoing voice calls from LTE to circuit-switched 3G and 2G networks.

Ericsson IMS portfolio will enable Telefonica in the future to provide converged multimedia services such as video calling, video conferencing and collaboration services, regardless if they are used via the operator’s mobile or fixed network.

Karsten Schroder, head of Converged Solutions, Telefonica Germany, said: “We will be re-using the IMS core for our mobile customers. We will be the first operator to prove that VoLTE is not just a standard, but can be used in a real-life multi-vendor environment.”

Ericsson has signed 120 commercial IMS contracts worldwide for both fixed- and mobile access, of which around 70 IMS systems are running live traffic.

In addition, Ericsson has around 300 IMS test and trial contracts.
