Ericsson names Ulf Ewaldsson as strategy and tech head

ulf-ewaldsson-of-ericssonTelecom network and software major Ericsson, which recently named an interim CEO, has appointed Ulf Ewaldsson as strategy and technology head.

The development indicates that Ulf Ewaldsson will not be the new CEO of Ericsson.

Ulf Ewaldsson currently holds the position as chief technology officer and head of Group Function Technology.

Current Ericsson’s chief strategy officer Rima Qureshi was appointed head of Region North America, Ericsson’s largest region, on 1 July 2016

Ulf Ewaldsson brings to this position more than 20 years of experience in product management, industry development and customer relationships.

In addition to her role as head of Region North America, Rima Qureshi will continue to drive the strategic partnership with Cisco.

Both Ewaldsson and Qureshi will continue to be executive leadership team members and report to Ericsson’s interim CEO Jan Frykhammar. In July, Jan Frykhammar became the interim CEO after the resignation of Hans Vestberg.

Ulf Ewaldsson started within Ericsson in 1990 and since held various management positions in the group including head of Ericsson in different countries and key customer accounts. As part of his previous assignments he has been based in China, Japan, Hong Kong and Hungary.

Ulf Ewaldsson has been senior vice president, group CTO and head of Group Function Technology at Ericsson since February 1, 2012.

In this role, he is driving the development of 5G and future technologies as well as securing that current solutions meet the company’s high technology standards. Ulf Ewaldsson is the chairman of Ericsson’s Research Board.

Before becoming CTO, Ulf Ewaldsson was head of Product Area Radio at Ericsson Business Unit Networks from 2007 until 2012 — instrumental in helping create technology products such as HSPA and LTE in the radio access network, the multi-standard RBS 6000, and the antenna-integrated radio unit.
