Ericsson leads mobile backhaul microwave radio market with 22% share in 2011

Telecom Lead India: Ericsson is leading the global
mobile backhaul microwave radio market with 22 percent share in 2011. In Q4
2011, Huawei was the leader. Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Huawei, Tellabs, and ZTE
lead the Ethernet mobile backhaul routers and gateways segment.

Mobile backhaul equipment market increased 8 percent to $7.4
billion in 2011. The growth in 2010 was 10 percent.

A cumulative $39 billion will be spent on mobile backhaul
equipment over the 5 years from 2012 to 2016, according to Infonetics.

IP/Ethernet equipment contributes to more than 90 percent of
all mobile backhaul equipment spending. Operators are looking for lower mobile
data traffic costs, accommodate the 3G mobile broadband data transition, and
move to IP as the basic technology of LTE and WiMAX.

Infonetics said about 150 mobile operators are actively
deploying IP/Ethernet backhaul, up from 100 in 2010 and 25 in 2009.

Around 55 percent of the world’s mobile backhaul physical
connections are on microwave. More than half of all mobile backhaul equipment
revenue in 2011 came from dual TDM/Ethernet microwave and packet-only microwave
equipment combined.

Infonetics observed a surge in Ethernet mobile backhaul
router purchases in China.

We expect the China surge to subside in 2012, impacting the
overall market; then slow, steady growth in this already-large market should
resume in 2013,” said Michael Howard, principal analyst and co-founder of
Infonetics Research.

Mobile backhaul test equipment market to grow at CAGR of 12% in
2011-2014

The global mobile backhaul test equipment market will grow
at a CAGR of 12.1 percent over 2011-2014. Key vendors dominating this market
space include Ixia, Spirent, EXFO, and JDSU.

One of the key factors contributing to this market growth is
increasing mobile data traffic. The global mobile backhaul test equipment
market has been witnessing migration to ethernet backhaul. However,
interoperability of multiple standards could pose a challenge to the growth of
this market.
