A lot of carriers do indeed want IP over DWDM and OTN
(optical transport network) integrated into their routers to save money,
according to Infonetics Research.
Around 83 percent of them are either already using
IPoDWDM on routers or plan to for access, metro, backbone and/or data center
connections.
Certainly they don’t want optics everywhere or on every
router, but it’s clear that most want to use IPoDWDM and OTN selectively to
help them drive down costs.
The survey finds a majority of carriers plan to deploy
IPoDWDM on metro routers and backbone routers, the most heavily-trafficked
routers.
Most service providers plan to adopt OTN to carry 100
Gigabit Ethernet (100GE) in ODU4 containers, and in most cases the router will
aggregate traffic from ten 10GE signals. Although the same numbers of operators
plan use of IPoDWDM and OTN on routers this year compared to last year, fewer
now plan to deploy by 2012, indicating a delay in deployment plans for some.
