Alcatel-Lucent’s XRS enables Belgacom able to handle the data demand created by enterprises and residential customers.

Johan Luystermans, vice president Network Engineering & Operations, Belgacom, says its customers will be able to watch more videos in more places, play more sophisticated video games, perform more transactions, share more data.

The XRS system takes up less physical space and consumes significantly less power than alternative routers, delivering cost and efficiency benefits to operators like Belgacom.

Luis Martinez Amago, president of Alcatel-Lucent’s EMEA region, says the XRS will benefit Belgacom significantly in both meeting the needs of home and institutional customers, and in lowering the operational cost of running an IP network.

Core routers direct data traffic at the heart of the Internet network and determine the speed at which packets of data are delivered. Alcatel-Lucent’s 7950 XRS router lowers operational complexity and deployment risks for service providers while providing an immediate boost to the IP core.

Alcatel-Lucent claims that it reshaped the edge router market with the launch of its Service Router (SR). Today, it has a 25 percent market share, with more than 450 customers worldwide in IP routing.

Telefonica recently said it will deploy the XRS in Argentina and the Czech Republic.
