Alcatel-Lucent announced its deal to supply IP/MPLS and optical networking technology to offer broadband to 8 million people in underserved areas in east Poland.

The broadband project is initiated by local Polish authorities and co-funded by the European Union.

“By the end of 2015 high-speed Internet services will be available to 100 percent of companies and businesses, public institutions as well as residents of five regions of Eastern Poland,” said Iwona Wendel, undersecretary of State, Polish Ministry of Infrastructure and Development.

The project under the National Broadband Plan and Eastern Poland Broadband Network investment initiative represents one of the largest national broadband initiatives in Europe, said Alcatel-Lucent in a statement.

The Polish National Broadband Plan targets to connect 100 percent of households to the Internet at 30 Mbps speeds and 50 percent with 100 Mbps speeds by 2020.

Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its IP/MPLS and DWDM 100G optical networking technology including the 7750 Service Router and 1830 Photonic Service Switch. It will provide its services as well as the management of the networks up to 2030 in five regions in Poland. Alcatel-Lucent will complete the broadband deployment in November 2015.

As per the broadband deal, Alcatel-Lucent will also deliver and maintain an IP and optical transport management system, customer relationship management, and provide network status monitoring using its IP and optical portfolios, including the 5620 Service Aware Manager.

The telecom network vendor is deploying its agile optical networking DWDM solution using its 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) for a 100G transport network to support advanced fixed and mobile access network service.
