Airvana launches TD-LTE small cell for SMBs

Airvana, a provider of small cell solutions, has launched the S1000, a 2.5-GHz TD-LTE small cell with integrated Wi-Fi for SMBs.

The company said its existing OneCell LTE solution is meant for larger locations.

The S1000 allows telecom operators to densify their wireless networks, improving network speed and capacity in high usage locations, while offloading their macro networks.

Over five million business locations in the U.S. — and many more globally — are in spaces of 50,000 square feet (5,000 square meters) or smaller. These include branch offices, retail stores, restaurants and light industrial facilities.

The S1000’s circuit-switched fallback (CSFB) and voice over LTE (VoLTE) capabilities enable voice support for both legacy voice and new VoLTE devices. TD-LTE is deployed at high frequencies that do not easily penetrate building walls, driving the need for an indoor solution.

In addition to TD-LTE, the S1000 offers 802.11ac dual-band, dual-concurrent Wi-Fi to deliver high data rate performance for the latest user devices. The S1000 Wi-Fi supports private access for small business employees and public access for visitors.

Dimitris Mavrakis, principal analyst at Ovum, said: “Airvana’s OneCell, being multi-operator, can solve large enterprise and venue-owner needs while S1000 provides technology flexibility for smaller businesses and venues.”

Rod Gatehouse, vice president of marketing and product management, Airvana, said that Airvana small cells are entirely plug-and-play and easy to manage, dramatically driving down the total cost of ownership.
