Xiaomi announces seventh manufacturing plant in India

Xiaomi today announced its seventh manufacturing plant in India – in Tamil Nadu — in partnership with Flex.
Xiaomi campaign with Katrina KaifXiaomi has seven smartphone manufacturing plants across four campuses in partnership with Foxconn, Flex and Hipad.

Xiaomi has a combined manufacturing capacity of up to 3 smartphones per second during operating hours.

Xiaomi India shipped 41.1 million smartphones in the country grabbing 28.9 percent share in 2018. Samsung shipped 31.9 million smartphones taking 22.4 percent share of the Indian smartphone market, according to IDC.

Currently, Xiaomi sells 99 percent of locally made smartphones in India.

It has more than 20,000 employees, out of which over 95 percent are women employees, across these seven smartphone manufacturing plants.

Xiaomi is also bringing the component ecosystem to India. Xiaomi sources nearly 65 percent of the value of the smartphone locally.

In addition, Xiaomi sources smartphone chargers, USB cables and batteries from local component companies.

The company also partners with Navitasys India, a TDK group subsidiary to manufacture Mi Power banks locally.

Muralikrishnan B, chief operating officer of Xiaomi India, said: “Smartphone manufacturing partnership with Flex will drive our localization efforts; ensuring that we locally design and offer our innovative products.”

Redmi 5A and Redmi Note 5/Pro series emerged as the fastest selling smartphones in 2018 across brands driving 10 million shipments each in the entire year.

The latest IDC report said Xiaomi is the leading smartphone brand in the online channel with 47.2 percent share, climbing to the second slot in the offline channel by surpassing Vivo in Q4 2018.
