Smartphone ASP

Smartphone average selling prices (ASPs) grew by 2.8 percent year-on-year but saw a quarter-on-quarter decline of 5.6 percent, settling at $248.

The entry-level segment (sub-$100) experienced a sharp 36 percent decline in market share, dropping to 14 percent from 22 percent a year ago, with Xiaomi leading this category, followed by Poco and Realme.

The mass budget segment ($100-$200) saw an 8 percent increase in shipments, now holding a 44 percent market share. Xiaomi, Realme, and Vivo dominated this segment, collectively accounting for 60 percent of the market.

The entry-premium segment ($200-$400) saw significant growth, with its market share rising to 30 percent from 22 percent last year, registering a 42 percent increase in shipments. OPPO, Vivo, and Samsung were the key players in this category, together holding almost 60 percent of the market.

The mid-premium segment ($400-$600) experienced a 25 percent decline in unit shipments, now representing 4 percent of the market. Vivo led this segment with a 25 percent share, followed by OnePlus and OPPO.

The premium segment ($600-$800) accounted for 2 percent of the market, with a 37 percent decline in unit shipments. Despite this, Apple’s share in this segment increased to 61 percent, with Samsung following at 24 percent.

The super-premium segment ($800+) saw 22 percent growth, with its market share increasing to 7 percent from 6 percent. Apple’s iPhone models dominated this category, holding an 83 percent market share, followed by Samsung at 16 percent.

5G smartphones

The number of 5G smartphones shipped in the second quarter reached 27 million, with 5G devices now making up 77 percent of total shipments, up from 49 percent in the same quarter last year.

The ASP of 5G smartphones dropped by 22 percent, reaching $293. The mass budget 5G segment ($100-$200) saw particularly strong growth, with a 2.5x increase in shipments, IDC said.

Online channels saw an 8 percent growth in shipments, increasing their market share to 50 percent in Q2 2024, compared to 47 percent in Q2 2023. Motorola entered the top five vendor list in the online segment, while Vivo climbed to the second spot, driven by its T series models. However, offline channel shipments declined by 2 percent, partly due to severe heatwave conditions in major parts of India.

Vivo retains lead

Vivo maintained its position as the market leader for the second consecutive quarter, supported by multiple launches across various price segments. Motorola registered the highest growth, while Nothing recorded the second-highest growth among all brands.

“The entry-level segment will continue to face challenges this year, despite efforts to introduce affordable 5G smartphones. Marketing around GenAI smartphones is expected to intensify, with heavy promotional activities,” said Navkendar Singh, Associate Vice President, Devices Research at IDC.
