Elliptic Labs, a leader in AI software and a provider of AI Virtual Smart Sensors, has signed a new license contract with Transsion, a major smartphone manufacturer. This agreement will see Elliptic Labs’ AI Virtual Proximity Sensor INNER BEAUTY integrated into several upcoming smartphone models from Transsion.
Transsion is the smartphone market leader in Africa with 51 percent share during the second-quarter of 2024, according to Canalys. Transsion shipped 9.2 million units of smartphones in Africa.
The AI Virtual Proximity Sensor INNER BEAUTY is a software-only solution that detects when a user holds their phone to their ear during a call, automatically turning off the display and disabling the touch screen. This feature helps conserve battery life and prevents accidental screen interactions, providing a more user-friendly experience. By utilizing software rather than hardware sensors, Elliptic Labs reduces device costs and eliminates the risks associated with hardware sourcing.

This partnership comes as Transsion’s smartphone shipments stabilize after significant growth, doubling since 2022. With shipments expected to exceed 100 million units for the first time in 2024, Transsion is cementing its presence in emerging markets under its brands iTel, Infinix, and Tecno.
“Much of Transsion’s success is due to a booming market for low-end devices and aggressive expansion into India, Pakistan, and Russia,” said Zaker Li, Principal Analyst at Omdia, said recently.
