BlackBerry App store crosses 3 billion BlackBerry app downloads

Telecom Lead America: Research In Motion (RIM), maker of
BlackBerry smartphone range, has finally got some good news to cheers about.
Blackberry’s App store surpassed 3 billion of BlackBerry app downloads,
according to the BlackBerry Developer blog.

At the recent BlackBerry Curve 9220 launch, Carlo
Chiarello, executive VP of smartphone division at RIM said that the company’s
app store is accelerating at 35 percent year over year growth with 177 million
app download per month.

In order to redefine and strengthen its app store, the
company has also started supporting HTML 5 developers.

Emerging markets such as India, China and Indonesia are
RIM’s focus area. The company now employs over 30 thousand app developers in
India.

The new milestone of 3 billion mark averages out to more
than 2.5 million downloads every single day.

The BlackBerry App store now offers above 90,000 apps for
sale. The company has been criticized for its weak app collection, which
analysts believe the main reason behind plunging revenues and poor sales in
past quarters.

In the U.S market, Apple’s App Store trounces RIM’s quite
thoroughly, hitting as it did 25 billion downloads in March.

RIM to slash 5,000 jobs, delays BlackBerry 10

RIM is betting high on BB10 operating system, the only
weapon of the company, which can either make or break its presence across the
globe. However, due to weak performance in the recent quarter, RIM has delayed
the launch of the new OS, which won’t launch until next year.

It is expected that the company could be forced to
reconsider last-resort options, including splitting down the middle and selling
off its networking business, or joining forces with Microsoft.

As per a leaked roadmap of RIM, two BB10 handsets and
a 4G PlayBook along with a 10-inch tablet named the Blackforest will be
next offering of the company.

RIM revenue plunges 43% at $2.8 billion in Q1 FY13

Research In Motion (RIM) has posted 43 percent decline in
revenues at $2.8 billion in Q1 FY13, as compared with $4.9 billion a year
earlier.

Net loss for the quarter was $518 million, as compared
with net loss of $125 million in Q4 FY12 and net income of $695 million a year
earlier.

In order to recover losses, RIM is also slashing 5,000
jobs across its global operations before the end of the year. The company
revealed that its business is crumbling faster than thought.
