ASUS in pact with Foxconn to start manufacturing smartphones

Zenfone Laser
ASUS has joined hands with Foxconn to start local manufacturing of smartphones in Sri City in Andhra Pradesh.

The Taiwanese company will begin manufacturing operations with Zenfone 2 Laser followed by ZenFone Go. Last month, the company launched its Zenfone Selfie, Zenfone 2 Laser and Zenfone 2 Deluxe.

ASUS, which is not part of the top 5 smartphone makers list, aims to manufacture 1.5 lakh smartphones per month by the end of the current financial year. Production of 1.5 lakh smartphones will account for almost 80 percent of sales in India.

ASUS aims to achieve 5 percent market share in the country by next year.

Peter Chang, regional head – South Asia & Country Manager – System Business Group – ASUS India, said: “The Indian government’s focus on Make in India will enable us to bring our products to consumers who are looking for features and design sensibilities of a high-end smartphone at an economic price.”

IDC says India is poised to overtake the US as the second largest smartphone market in next few years. Shipments in India grew 44 percent to 26.5 million units in April—June.

Global smartphone makers like Xiaomi, Motorola and Gionee have commenced assembling their handsets in India.
