T-Mobile Expands Satellite Connectivity in Dead Zones

T-Mobile launched satellite-to-cell network support for apps including WhatsApp, Google Maps, and X. The system uses over 650 Starlink satellites, allowing phones to switch to satellite mode when terrestrial signals are unavailable. The service is part of T-Mobile’s “Experience Beyond” plan, with an option for other users at $10 per month.

FCC suspends work

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) suspended most normal operations and furloughed 81 percent of its staff due to a lapse in U.S. government funding, affecting consumer complaint responses, enforcement of regulations, licensing services, and approvals for new equipment. The FCC continues work on a planned spectrum auction mandated by Congress. Meanwhile, the telecom industry is expanding services.

BSNL Goes Digital: Tata Communications Launches India-Wide eSIM Service

Tata Communications partnered with Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) to implement a pan-India eSIM service using Tata Communications’ GSMA-accredited MOVE platform, allowing BSNL subscribers to activate 2G, 3G, or 4G services remotely via a QR code, removing the need for physical SIM cards. The eSIM service enables dual-SIM functionality on supported devices, letting users connect with local operators while traveling abroad and switch networks without changing physical SIMs. This deployment expands digital mobile services across India and demonstrates the integration of cloud-based SIM management in telecom operations.

Telecom Ministry Launches Measures to Fix Call Drops and Boost Network Coverage

Union Minister Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar met with telecom operators, Department of Telecommunications (DoT), and Digital Bharat Nidhi (DBN) officials to discuss call drops, network coverage, and mobile number portability. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) monitors service quality. TRAI’s August report showed MTNL and Vodafone Idea faced issues in some areas, while BSNL and Bharti Airtel did not meet customer care response benchmarks in certain circles. The government is taking steps to strengthen telecom infrastructure, including setting up 27,000 towers and connecting 26,000 villages. Monitoring of service quality will now be monthly and conducted at the smartphone level instead of tower level. Financial penalties of up to Rs 3 lakh per parameter will apply for non-compliance across 30 parameters.
