Liberia Targets Telecom Duopoly, Opens Door for New Market Entrants
Liberia’s telecom market is dominated by two companies: MTN and Orange. This has led to limited competition, affecting prices and service quality. The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) plans to review current licenses and reclaim unused frequencies to allow new companies to enter the market. This aims to increase competition and improve services. The LTA is also considering partnerships or new investments in Liberia Telecommunications Corporation (LTC) to make it a competitor in the market. The authority is engaging with communities to identify service needs and improve coverage.
Nokia Prepares New Partnerships as HMD Global Licensing Deal Nears End
HMD Global has been producing Nokia-branded smartphones under a licensing agreement since 2016. This agreement is set to expire in 2026. HMD Global is exploring partnerships with large-scale mobile manufacturers to continue producing Nokia smartphones. A recent Reddit post from Nokia’s community manager invited potential collaborators to contact the company, showing interest in reviving the Nokia brand in the smartphone market. In 2024, HMD Global began marketing smartphones under its own brand, limiting the Nokia brand to feature phones. This indicates Nokia is considering direct involvement in smartphone manufacturing and marketing after the licensing deal ends. Nokia has also explored partnerships with other brands like Mattel and Heineken to diversify its product range.
