Mittal’s Power Move: Bharti Telecom Plans to Reclaim Airtel Majority Control

Sunil Bharti Mittal has outlined an ambitious plan for Bharti Telecom to regain majority control in Bharti Airtel over the coming years, restoring the promoter firm’s historical position as the controlling shareholder. Speaking amid ongoing restructuring efforts, he said the goal is to consolidate shareholding under a single promoter entity, which would improve governance efficiency and strengthen long-term strategic decision-making. The plan includes increasing Bharti Telecom’s stake to above 50 percent through a series of transactions and internal restructuring moves. Mittal also highlighted parallel efforts to raise ownership in Airtel’s African operations, targeting up to 90 percent control. The strategy reflects a broader vision to streamline global holdings and prepare for future leadership transition within the group.

France’s Mega Telecom Shake-Up: SFR Buyout Talks Extended as €20B Deal Hangs in Balance

Negotiations between Altice France and a consortium of Bouygues Telecom, Orange and iliad to acquire SFR have been extended until June 5, highlighting ongoing uncertainty over one of Europe’s biggest telecom consolidation deals. The revised offer values SFR at around €20.35–20.4 billion and would split assets among the three operators if completed. Altice confirmed the discussions remain “constructive” but stressed there is still no guarantee of an agreement. The deal, first structured in April, aims to reduce France’s four-operator market to three, potentially reshaping competition, pricing and investment in the sector. Regulatory approval and asset division complexities remain key hurdles as talks continue under extended exclusivity.

Airtel Faces DoT Action Over KYC Lapses, Pays ₹2.1 Lakh Penalty Bharti Airtel has paid a ₹2.1 lakh fine imposed by India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) following a Customer Application Form (CAF) audit that identified minor lapses in subscriber verification procedures. The audit, conducted in February 2026, highlighted non-compliance with mandatory identity verification norms under telecom licensing rules. Airtel confirmed acceptance of the penalty, noting the financial impact is negligible. The case reflects continued regulatory oversight in India’s telecom sector, where operators undergo regular inspections to ensure strict KYC compliance and prevent SIM fraud. While the penalty is small in scale, it underscores the importance of maintaining robust verification systems. The issue is expected to be fully closed after payment, with no operational or material financial impact on the company.
