Tonami, Alcatel-Lucent sign GPON deal

Japanese cable operator Tonami Satellite Communications Television has tapped telecom equipment vendor Alcatel-Lucent to upgrade the current access network to fiber infrastructure.

The cable operator, which offers triple-play services, will use Alcatel-Lucent’s GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) technology to increase its current 120Mbps downlink Internet access by up to 20 times, replacing its existing HFC (Hybrid Fiber Coax) network.

This will allow Tonami to improve its triple-play (TV, data, voice) service to its 42,000 customers in Tonami City.

“We need to migrate our current legacy HFC infrastructure to FTTH, to cope with the changing customer needs of cable TV and high speed internet access services, for faster downloading, interactive gaming, cloud services, or to accommodate for the growing number of 4K/8K TVs, tablets and smartphones at home,” said Tsuneharu Kawai, president of Tonami Satellite Communications Television.

As per the deal, Alcatel-Lucent will supply its ISAM product family including the 7360 ISAM FX and 5520 Access Management System to support GPON-enabled fiber-to-the-home (FTTH).

Tonami will be the first Japanese cable operator to use Alcatel-Lucent’s 7360 ISAM FX GPON-based solution to bring Internet service to the homes of the citizens of Tonami bundled with voice and TV-services like HD-TV.
