Virgin enhances broadband speed to 200Mbps to take on BT

Virgin Mobile
UK-based telecom major Virgin Media has enhanced broadband speed to 200Mbps challenging main rival BT.

Vivid 200Mbps from Virgin Media will be available to its 4.6 million broadband customers from 1 October 2015 as an upgrade.

“This is the third time the company has boosted broadband speeds in five years, quadrupling the fastest speeds available from 50Mbps in 2010 to Vivid 200Mbps in 2015,” said Gregor McNeil, managing director of Consumer at Virgin Media.

Vivid 200Mbps enables customers to download two hour HD movie in three minutes two seconds and a music album in three seconds.

Virgin Media broadband customers can upgrade from existing speeds of up to 50Mbps, 100Mbps and 152Mbps to 70Mbps, Vivid 150Mbps and Vivid 200Mbps.

The upgrade will assist Virgin Media broadband customers on even the lowest available package to receive broadband speeds at the top end of the range available from providers operating on the BT network.

Virgin Media has deployed the DOCSIS 3 technology to increase the broadband speed. Virgin Media said 90 percent of customers can upgrade by the end of 2015.

Data usage on the Virgin Media network is currently growing at a rate of 60 percent every year and if the trend continues data usage will be 10,000 percent higher by 2025.

Recently, Virgin Media announced its plans to invest £3 billion to connect 4 million more homes and businesses to ultrafast broadband speeds.
