Japan’s multiplay service revenue to reach $34.9 bn

Japan’s multiplay service revenue is expected to grow at a 3.3 percent CAGR, from $29.6 billion in 2023 to $34.9 billion by 2028, driven by rising demand for blended services and an increase in multi-play households.

Average monthly household expenditure on multiplay bundles will increase from $53.3 in 2023 to $55.7 by 2028. This is attributed to the rising popularity of doubleplay and tripleplay bundles, particularly those offering high-speed fiber broadband and premium perks like gigabit speeds and music access.

Doubleplay services are projected to remain the most popular, though their share will decline from 76.7 percent in 2023 to 72.7 percent in 2028. Tripleplay and quadplay services will see increased adoption, growing from 19.8 percent and 3.5 percent respectively in 2023 to 22.7 percent and 4.6 percent in 2028.

The expansion of high-speed fiber broadband across Japan is anticipated to bolster the uptake of multiplay packages.

KDDI is set to dominate the doubleplay and quadplay markets due to its competitive pricing strategy, while NTT will maintain its lead in the triple-play segment through 2028.
