5G subscriptions to top 190 mn in 2020 and 2.8 bn in 2025: Ericsson

The global number of 5G subscriptions is forecast to top 190 million by the end of 2020 and 2.8 billion in 2025, according to the June 2020 edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report.
Ericsson 5G solutionsFWA connections are forecast to reach nearly 160 million by end of 2025. FWA will account for about 25 percent of global mobile network data traffic in 2025 as compared with around 15 percent of the global total in 2019. FWA-generated traffic is projected to grow nearly 8 fold to reach 53 exabytes in 2025, representing 25 percent of the global total mobile network data traffic.

FWA delivered over 4G or 5G is a cost-efficient alternative for providing broadband and several factors are driving the FWA market: demand from consumers and businesses for digital services along with government-sponsored programs and subsidies.

India

Total traffic is projected to triple, reaching 21EB per month in 2025. Number of smartphone subscriptions in India has increased to 620 million in 2019 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 9 percent, reaching 1 billion by 2025. Around 410 million additional smartphone users are expected in India by 2025.

LTE remains the dominant technology, accounting for 49 percent of mobile subscriptions in 2019. LTE will be dominant, representing 64 percent of mobile subscriptions in 2025. LTE subscriptions are forecast to increase from 550 million in 2019 to 820 million in 2025, increasing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7 percent.

Mobile broadband technologies accounted for 58 percent of mobile subscriptions in 2019, and this figure is forecast to reach 82 percent by 2025. The total number of mobile broadband subscriptions is set to exceed 1 billion by 2025.

“5G will represent around 18 percent of mobile subscriptions in India at the end of 2025,” said Patrik Cerwall, head of Strategic Marketing Insights.
