MWC 2019: 5G chipset market picks up momentum

The Cisco VNI report says 5G speeds will increase from 76 Mbps in 2019 to 170 Mbps by 2022 showing how chipset majors Qualcomm and Intel will be gaining from the 5G devices market.
5G connection forecast Asia PacificTelecom carriers in Korea and China are set to start turning on the 5G networks this spring, with carriers in the United States planning rollouts for later this year. Viavi Solutions, a leading testing solutions company, said 55 5G networks will be live by the end of 2019 against 13 in 2018.

US-based mobile network operators are racing to 5G, making network reliability and speed a top priority in metro areas to support consumers’ evolving mobile activities, according to the latest RootMetrics report.

5G smartphones will be making an appearance, and mobile service providers will announce 5G deployments for 2019 at the Mobile World Congress, says ABI Research. AI (Artificial Intelligence) capabilities being featured, but most will focus on network optimization rather than new 5G use cases.

The Cisco report said 5G connections – smartphones and other devices — will be reaching 422 million or 3.4 percent of total mobile connections in 2022.

Qualcomm on Tuesday unveiled its second-generation of 5G modem chips to connect 5G smartphones to 5G networks. Qualcomm will be targeting OEMs from smartphone firms, PC makers, etc.

The 5G chipset market is expected to be worth $2.03 billion in 2020 and $22.41 billion by 2026, at a CAGR of 49.2 percent from 2020 to 2026.

5G chipsets will be available in smartphones, tablets, laptops, C-V2X devices, and routers, customer premises equipment, and network infrastructure equipment.

Demand for 5G-enabled smartphones is likely to be the key factor propelling the growth of the 5G chipset market.

Qualcomm has already claimed its leadership position when it announced its 5G tie up with Samsung. The Korean consumer electronics company will be bringing 5G smartphones for Verizon and AT&T.

Chinese smartphone maker as Xiaomi last year used Qualcomm’s first-generation 5G chip for small batches of 5G phones. Qualcomm today announced the launch of the second-generation chip aimed at mass production. OEMs will be launching their 5G devices later this year.

Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest smart phone maker, will announce its new flagship Galaxy series phones. Samsung and Qualcomm in December publicly committed to working together to release a 5G smartphone this year. Analysts believe Samsung will unveil a 5G version of its flagship models this week, Reuters reported.

Huawei Technologies, the world’s third-largest smartphone maker, last month announced that it has built a 5G chip that it will use in its own phones.

Samsung has a 5G modem called the Exynos 5100 that will power many Samsung devices sold outside the United States.

Taiwan-based MediaTek also has 5G chip, with Intel targeting the second half of this year for a release.

“This year, virtually every major Android phone maker will be launching a phone with 5G,” said Ignacio Contreras, head of 5G marketing for Qualcomm.

Apple has not said when the iPhone will have 5G capabilities. Bloomberg earlier reported that 5G iPhones will not appear until 2020. This is because Intel will not be ready with its 5G chipsets.

Apple disclosed in a court hearing last month that it held talks with MediaTek and Samsung about supplying modems for 2019 iPhones. Apple dropped Qualcomm’s chips in favor of those from Intel in its iPhones released last year.
