India adds 140 million telecom users in 2011

in India has gone up to 926.53 million in 2011 from 787.28 million in 2010,
adding 139.25 million new users in 12 months.


 

Out of this, wireless subscription touched
893.84 million at the end of December 2011 from 752.19 million in December
2010.


 

Active wireless subscribers on the date of
peak VLR in December 2011 are 646.77 million. 529.22 million subscribers were
active subscribers in VLR in December 2010.


 

Wireline subscription has plummeted to 32.69
million in December 2011 from 35.09 million in December 2010.


 

India added 2.38 million broadband users in
12 months. Broadband subscription touched 13.30 million at the end of December
2011 from 10.92 Million in December 2010.


 

TRAI said the number of telephone
subscribers in India increased to 926.53 million at the end of December, 2011
from 917.33 million at the end of November 2011, registering a 1 percent
growth.


 

The share of urban subscribers has declined
to 65.97 percent from 66.11 percent whereas share of rural Subscribers has
increased to 34.03 percent in the month of December 2011.


 

Subscription in urban areas grew from
606.47 million in November, 2011 to 611.19 million at the end of December,
2011. Subscription in rural areas increased from 310.86 million to 315.33
million during the same period.


 

The growth of urban and rural subscription
is 0.78 percent and 1.44 percent respectively. The overall urban teledensity
has increased from 166.84 to 167.85 and rural teledensity increased from 36.98
to 37.48.


Total Wireless subscriber base increased
from 884.37 million in November 2011 to 893.84 million at the end of December
2011, registering a growth of 1.07 percent. The share of urban subscriber has
marginally decreased from 65.73 percent to 65.59 percent where as share of
rural subscribers has marginally increased from 34.27 percent to 34.41 percent.


The overall wireless tele-density in India
reaches 74.15. Wireless subscription in urban areas increased from 581.33
million in November 2011 to 586.26 million at the end of December 2011.


The subscription in rural areas increased
from 303.04 million to 307.59 million during the same period. This shows higher
growth in rural subscription (1.50 percent) than urban subscription (0.85
percent). The urban wireless teledensity has increased from 159.92 to 161.01
and rural teledensity has increased from 36.05 to 36.56.
