Alcatel-Lucent, Energia conduct G.Fast trials in Japan

Telecom network vendor Alcatel-Lucent in association with Energia Communications is conducting G.Fast field trial in Japan — to increase network capacity to 40 Gb/s.

The objective of the trial is to deliver up to 1G ultra-broadband speed on Energia Communications’ existing copper network – using Alcatel-Lucent’s G.fast technology — to multi-dwelling buildings.

Energia Communications will be utilizing Alcatel-Lucent’s TWDM-PON technology over its existing PON FTTH network, using the same fiber, to increase network capacity to 40 Gb/s using multiple wavelengths from 1 gigabit-per-second. The company will be using Alcatel-Lucent’s IP/MPLS 7750 Service Router to backhaul traffic from the access aggregation network to Energia Communications’ core network.

Alcatel-Lucent broadband connectivity

Fiber-to-the-home ultra-broadband connections have reached more than 37 million households in Japan, according to the MIC.
The G.Fast field trial in Japan will support the launch of the first 8K-resolution TV test broadcasts scheduled to begin in 2016, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

Alcatel-Lucent in a statement said the field trial shows that TWDM-PON can coexist on the same fiber with 1Gbps EPON, providing a total capacity of up to 40G.

“Using its TWDM-PON, G.fast, and IP/MPLS Service Router technologies, Alcatel-Lucent can build a competitive network for its customers that helps them to smoothly evolve to meet future customer demands,” said Nicolas Bouverot, CEO of Alcatel-Lucent Japan.
