Telecom service provider Telenor today said it would launch mobile services in Myanmar on Saturday.
Telenor network will initially be available in Mandalay, the second-largest city in Myanmar. Telenor will launch its mobile services — 2G and 3G technologies — in the metropolitan hubs of Nay Pyi Taw and Yangon, and expand into more towns, villages and rural areas.
Telenor Myanmar said mobile services will be available in more than 1,500 outlets across Mandalay.
Close to nine million people live in main cities of Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw and Yangon.
Within weeks Telenor services will be available in more than 12,000 outlets.
“We made a commitment to launch affordable and accessible mobile services within eight months of receiving our license,” said Petter-Borre Furberg, CEO of Telenor Myanmar.
Telenor said a SIM card will cost 1500 Kyat ($1.5) and will be available along with top-up cards. Price for voice calls to any number in Myanmar will be 25 Kyat per minute. These SIM cards support overseas calling and international roaming.
The telecom operator has already hired more than 400 employees in Myanmar and 80 percent are Myanmar nationals.
