India smartphone share: Samsung 35%, Micromax 15, Karbonn 10, LAVA 6, Nokia 4

IDC in its India smartphone market share list said today that Samsung holds 35 percent, Micromax 15 percent, Karbonn 10 percent, LAVA 6 percent and Nokia 4 percent in the first quarter of 2014.

The global IT market research agency said Samsung maintained its leadership in the smartphone market thanks to high volumes from the low-end devices like S7262 Galaxy Star Pro Dual SIM and Galaxy S Duos 2 S7582.

The top selling models for Micromax were the low-end Bolt series.

IDC said Karbonn low-end range of 2G smartphones picked up by the Indian smartphone market in Q1 2014.

LAVA climbed up to the 4th position with close to 6 percent market share. New XOLO launches like A500S and A500 have fared well.

Smartphone market share list in Q1 2014

Nokia, which was acquired by Microsoft, made its way back to the top 5 list with about 4 percent market share. The Nokia X launch coupled with other low-end Lumia phones helped in improving the overall performance of the brand.

India smartphone shipment grew 186 percent in Q1 2014 against China which posted 31 percent growth.

IDC said the smartphone penetration in India is around 10 percent. The market will grow due to a variety of factors including greater availability of low-cost devices and additional sales emphasis by top-flight vendors on less populous parts of the country.

Smartphone prediction

lDC said the India smartphone shipments will reach 80.57 million units in 2014. IDC expects that the Indian smartphone market will grow at a CAGR of about 40 percent for the next 5 years.
