Nokia expects delay in Microsoft deal closure

Nokia, the Finnish smartphone vendor, is expecting one month delay in completing the $7.2 billion sales agreement with Microsoft.

The transaction is pending approvals from certain antitrust authorities in Asia which are still conducting their reviews.

Earlier, Nokia was expecting to complete the transaction to sell substantially all of its Devices & Services business and license its patents to Microsoft in the first quarter of 2014.

Nokia first announced the transaction on September 3, 2013. Nokia today said Microsoft and Nokia remain committed to the transaction.

Nokia and Microsoft have already received most of the required regulatory approvals, including approvals from the European Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice.

Furthermore, Nokia and Microsoft continue to make good progress related to the closing conditions and integration planning, said Nokia.

Nokia said the ongoing tax proceedings in India will not have any impact on the timing of the closing or the material deal terms of the anticipated transaction between Nokia and Microsoft.

Nokia India up in arms against a new $414 million sales tax claim

Last week, Nokia said it received a new $414 million sales tax claim from the Tamil Nadu tax authority in India. The smartphone vendor considered the claim absurd because it exports all devices from its Chennai plant.
