LG’s latest smartphones, BlackBerry 10 phones and Lenovo’s new launches did not attract users to take to them to the top 5 list.

Canalys Analyst says smart phone shipments in India rose 129 percent to 9 million. India is now the world’s third largest smart phone market.

For comparison, smartphone shipments in the U.K. rose 34 percent to 7.4 million.

In Japan, smartphone shipments increased 25 percent to 8.6 million.

The U.S. shipments of smartphone enhanced 36 percent to 32.9 million.

In China, the number one smartphone market in the world, shipments increased 108 percent to 88.1 million.

“Dynamics of the Indian market make it challenging for foreign vendors, besides Samsung, to succeed. Samsung has invested heavily in its brand and channel relationships over a number of years, which has given it a big advantage over many of its international competitors,” said Jessica Kwee, Canalys Analyst.

The research report noted that India is a market in transition, moving from feature phones to smart phones, and is a market that offers huge potential as hundreds of millions of users have yet to upgrade their feature phones.

Domestic phone vendors such as Micromax and Karbonn are capitalizing on the popularity of their feature phones and are quicker to respond to local market demands, hence their current success.
