Airtel Capex dips 34 percent to $411 million in first quarter fiscal 2014

Bharti Airtel Capex (capital expenditure) decreased 34 percent to $411 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2014 from $624 million in the same period last fiscal.

On quarter-on-quarter basis, Airtel Capex decreased 32 percent.

The billionaire Sunil Mittal-promoted Bharti Airtel on Wednesday said it invested Rs 1,280 crore as Capex in India. Out of this, Airtel invested Rs 790 crore in network capacity build up for mobile services. There was 57 percent drop in Capex in mobile services in India.

The other Capex investment in India was Rs 66 crore (Rs 132 crore) in telemedia, Rs 224 crore (Rs 324 crore) in digital TV services and Rs 28 crore (Rs 16 crore) in enterprise business.

This means, Airtel’s investment in 4G, which is using TD-LTE technology, was significantly low during the first quarter.

Airtel has invested Rs 1,015 crore (Rs 842 crore) toward Capex in Africa.

The company said the total number of telecom sites increased to 158,613 in Q1 FY 2014 from 156,905 in Q4 FY 2013.

Meanwhile, Airtel on Wednesday said its revenue rose 9 percent and profit decreased 10 percent in Q1 FY 2014.
