Telecom Lead America: DukeNet Communications has tied up
with Cisco to expand their fiber network Ethernet access across the Southeast.
DukeNet has utilized the Cisco ASR 9000 network upgrade
in the Carolinas. This will assist DukeNet to provide additional services with
this routed platform while continuing to ensure advanced quality of service
(QoS) metrics.
Cisco said the upgrade will simplify operation and
accelerate IPv6 service implementation across the Southeast. Moreover, this
architecture will enable DukeNet to introduce profitable new services, optimize
network performance and efficiency, reduce operational costs and complexity,
and enhance the customer experience.
DukeNet Communications has built a fiber foundation over
7,000 miles of fiber across the Southeastern United States and is now a
Provider Edge (PE) core aggregation facility providing interconnectivity with
the broader Ethernet exchange network. This DukeNet next generation network is
now interconnected at Layer 2 and 3 to other provider networks.
David Herran, DukeNet’s senior director of network
architecture, said this is DukeNet’s first step to delivering IP and MPLS based
services, and this investment demonstrates the company’s commitment to
providing next generation services to their enterprise level customers.
Network operators such as DukeNet intend to seize growth
opportunities while monetizing new services, optimizing their operations,
reducing expenses, and improving scalability and flexibility to deliver
next-generation Internet experiences to the business community.
The Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers
can serve as the foundational baseline for next-generation Carrier Ethernet
networks, providing up to 96 terabits (Tbps) per system.
DukeNet installed ASR 9000 units in major metropolitan
areas including: Charlotte, Winston Salem/Greensboro, Raleigh/Durham, NC and
Greenville, SC. The company has plans to expand into Atlanta, GA, Knoxville and
Nashville, TN, Ashville, NC, Columbia and Charleston, SC in the near future.
