Quectel Launches New Smart Modules for On-Device AI
Quectel Wireless Solutions has launched three new smart modules based on MediaTek’s Genio platform, targeting connected products and on-device artificial intelligence applications. The SH503FM, SH603FC and SH803FD span entry-level, mid-range and high-performance requirements, giving manufacturers a common platform for applications ranging from connected displays to edge AI systems. The modules feature octa-core Arm Cortex-A78 and Cortex-A55 processors, Arm Mali-G57 MC2 graphics and support for Android 15 and Yocto Linux. They can support up to 16 GB of LPDDR5X memory and dual independent displays. The high-performance SH803FD is designed for applications including multi-camera edge computing, robotics, industrial tablets, generative AI workloads and local language-model processing.
TRAI Mandates Voice and SMS-Only Recharge Plans
India’s Telecom Regulatory Authority has directed telecom operators to offer special tariff vouchers providing voice calls and SMS without bundled data. The move is aimed at customers who primarily require basic calling and messaging services and do not need mobile internet. Under the revised consumer protection regulations, operators must provide voice-and-SMS-only options with shorter validity periods, while TRAI’s guidance also permits such plans to have validity of up to 365 days. The regulator’s decision gives customers more flexibility to select services based on their actual usage rather than paying for data they may not require. The directive applies to telecom service providers and is expected to expand the availability of simpler prepaid options across India’s mobile market.
Eutelsat Tests OneWeb LEO Connectivity on Polish Rail Network
Eutelsat has completed a live trial of OneWeb low Earth orbit satellite connectivity aboard a PKP Intercity passenger train in Poland. The trial operated on a route between Kozłów, Warszawa and Tczew and tested satellite connectivity while the train traveled at speeds of up to 160 km/h. ACO Solutions managed the technical deployment, while Hispasat participated as a distribution partner. Engineers installed a Kymeta Kestrel u5 flat-panel terminal on the train to maintain satellite tracking during movement. The trial represents Eutelsat’s first operational assessment of OneWeb connectivity across Poland’s national railway network and demonstrates the potential use of LEO satellite services for passenger internet access and increasingly connected railway operations.
