Apple AirPods 5 Start at $129 with ANC, Siri AI and Live Translation

Apple has launched AirPods 5, bringing Active Noise Cancellation, improved sound quality, Siri AI and Live Translation to its most affordable open-ear AirPods lineup.

AirPods 5 launch

The standard AirPods 5 are priced at $129, while AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case cost $149. Pre-orders opened on September 9, with retail availability beginning September 18, 2026, in the U.S. and more than 65 other countries and regions.

The new AirPods target customers looking for premium audio and AI features without moving to the more expensive AirPods Pro range.

AirPods 5 Price: $129 and $149 Versions

Apple is offering AirPods 5 in two configurations.

The standard AirPods 5 cost $129, making them the lowest-priced AirPods model to offer Active Noise Cancellation.

The $149 AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case add several useful upgrades, including:

Wireless charging support

Longer total battery life

On-stem volume controls

Charging through Apple Watch chargers, Qi-compatible chargers and USB-C

The $20 difference could make the $149 model attractive to users who value longer battery life and wireless charging.

Active Noise Cancellation Removes 50% More Noise

The launch of Apple AirPods 5 indicates that the biggest upgrade is Apple’s improved Active Noise Cancellation in an open-ear design.

Apple says AirPods 5 can remove up to 50 percent more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC.

The improvement comes from a new multiport acoustic architecture combined with upgraded computational audio algorithms.

AirPods 5 also include an improved Transparency mode that is designed to reproduce surrounding voices and environmental sounds more naturally.

Adaptive Audio automatically blends ANC and Transparency depending on surrounding noise levels, while Conversation Awareness lowers media volume when the wearer begins speaking.

These features move AirPods 5 closer to premium noise-management capabilities while retaining the open-ear design preferred by users who do not like silicone ear tips.

New Acoustic Architecture Improves Sound Quality

Apple has redesigned the internal audio system with technology inspired by AirPods Pro 3.

A new multiport acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ are designed to deliver richer sound and more detail across different ear shapes.

Apple is also improving Personalized Spatial Audio, which creates a customized sound profile using an iPhone equipped with a TrueDepth camera.

The combination of Spatial Audio, Adaptive EQ and improved acoustic engineering is intended to make music, video and other content sound more immersive despite the open-ear form factor.

Siri AI Brings Hands-Free Personal Assistance

AirPods 5 also become more closely integrated with Apple’s AI strategy.

When paired with an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone, users can access Siri AI hands-free.

Siri AI can use personal context from messages, emails, photos and other information to answer questions or perform actions.

For example, users could ask Siri to find a song recommended in a message or retrieve details of a restaurant reservation from an email.

AirPods users can also respond to Siri prompts using head gestures. A nod can indicate yes, while shaking the head can indicate no.

Siri AI is scheduled to roll out in beta with iOS 27 on September 14, initially in English.

Live Translation Expands AirPods Use Cases

Another major feature is Live Translation, powered by Apple Intelligence.

After downloading supported languages in Apple’s Translate app, users can hear conversations translated into their preferred language through AirPods.

Live Translation can be activated by pressing both AirPods stems simultaneously, asking Siri to start the feature, or using the Action button on a compatible iPhone.

Apple combines ANC with computational audio to make translated speech easier to hear during real-world conversations.

The feature could increase the usefulness of AirPods for travelers, international business users and multilingual families.

AirPods 5 Battery Life Reaches 22 Hours with ANC

Battery performance is another key difference between the two versions.

The AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case deliver up to five hours of listening time with ANC enabled on a single charge.

That represents an improvement of one hour compared with AirPods 4 with ANC.

Total listening time reaches up to 22 hours with ANC enabled when using the charging case.

Apple says the improvement comes partly from a redesigned battery.

The wireless charging case can be charged using an Apple Watch charger, Qi-compatible charger or USB-C cable, giving customers more charging flexibility.

Volume Swipe Comes to Open-Ear AirPods

The $149 model also introduces Force Sensor volume swipe controls to Apple’s open-ear AirPods line.

Users can swipe upward or downward on the stem to adjust volume directly rather than relying on an iPhone, Apple Watch or Siri.

This brings AirPods 5 closer to Apple’s Pro headphones in terms of direct physical controls.

Improved Durability and Recycled Materials

Apple has also improved resistance to dust, sweat and water, making AirPods 5 better suited to commuting, exercise and everyday use.

The headphones contain 40 percent recycled material overall, while the wireless charging case uses 70 percent recycled plastic.

Apple is also using 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery and says AirPods 5 production uses 35 percent renewable energy across its supply chain.

Are AirPods 5 Good Value at $129?

The biggest change with AirPods 5 is not simply improved sound. Apple is bringing features previously associated with higher-end earbuds into a $129 open-ear product.

At that price, customers get ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode, Spatial Audio, Siri AI, Live Translation and head-gesture controls.

The $149 version offers stronger overall value for users willing to spend another $20 because it adds wireless charging, up to 22 hours of ANC listening time and direct volume controls. For Apple, AirPods 5 also expand the role of wireless earbuds beyond music. Integration with Siri AI and Live Translation turns the headphones into a more important interface for Apple’s broader AI ecosystem while keeping the entry price below $150.
