Xfinity Mobile and Spectrum Mobile Outpace Industry Speeds with Wi-Fi-Driven Gains

Comcast and Charter are strengthening their positions in the U.S. wireless market as their respective services – Xfinity Mobile and Spectrum Mobile – continue to outperform traditional mobile-only networks on data speeds. This momentum is largely fueled by Wi-Fi offloading technologies such as PowerBoost and Speed Boost, which enhance performance by shifting traffic onto fixed broadband infrastructure, Ookla said in its report.

Speed of Comcast’s Xfinity Mobile and Charter’s Spectrum Mobile

From Q1 2023 to Q1 2026, Xfinity Mobile recorded a 4.4x increase in download speeds, rebounding from a slower starting point. Spectrum Mobile also delivered strong gains, with speeds rising 2.7x during the same period. In comparison, the mobile industry achieved 2.6x growth, indicating that cable MVNOs are now consistently staying ahead of the curve.

Ookla did not reveal the download speed of rivals of Xfinity Mobile and Spectrum Mobile. Xfinity Mobile and Spectrum Mobile compete with AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.

A key factor behind this performance is the extensive use of Wi-Fi networks. Both companies report that up to 90 percent of mobile traffic is routed through their fixed broadband systems. This not only reduces reliance on cellular infrastructure but also enables faster and more consistent data delivery in dense urban and suburban environments, Kerry Baker, who leads Ookla’s research and content efforts in North America, said in the Ookla report.

However, this hybrid model is not without challenges. Seasonal variations in underlying cellular partner networks still impact performance, particularly in Q2 and Q3. Additionally, deployments of CBRS spectrum in high-traffic zones face physical limitations such as signal attenuation caused by environmental factors.

The evolving partnership with T-Mobile – now supporting business customers for both Comcast and Charter – introduces another variable that could influence performance consistency. At the same time, the anticipated merger between Charter and Cox Communications is expected to reshape the competitive landscape. A key question remains how quickly Spectrum Mobile’s Speed Boost capabilities will be extended across Cox Mobile’s footprint.

According to media reports, Comcast’s mobile strategy is not driven by heavy standalone wireless capex. Instead, it leverages its existing broadband infrastructure and Wi-Fi network to offload traffic, reducing the need for large mobile network investments. This asset-light MVNO model allows Comcast to scale mobile services while focusing capital spending primarily on its core broadband network rather than cellular infrastructure. Mobile is increasingly viewed as a growth and retention driver within Comcast’s broader connectivity portfolio.

Pricing Strategy

Xfinity Mobile is positioned as a low-cost alternative to traditional carriers, supported by bundling with broadband services. Comcast has repeatedly adjusted pricing to remain competitive:

By-the-gig plan priced around $20 per month for 1 GB

Unlimited plans reduced, with multi-line discounts lowering per-line costs significantly

Bundling incentives such as free mobile lines with broadband plans and long-term price locks enhance value perception

Comcast emphasizes aggressive pricing and convergence bundles to drive subscriber growth and reduce churn, rather than investing heavily in mobile infrastructure.

Charter Communications – Spectrum Mobile

Charter follows a similar MVNO-led strategy but with clearly defined capital allocation:

Approximately $12 billion capex planned for 2025

Declining to $10.5-$11 billion in 2026 and further down to about $8 billion by 2028

Most of this investment is directed toward broadband network expansion, line extensions, and core operations rather than mobile infrastructure. Spectrum Mobile benefits from these investments by offloading traffic onto Charter’s fixed network and Wi-Fi footprint.

Pricing Strategy

Spectrum Mobile is known for highly aggressive pricing, particularly through bundled offerings:

“Spectrum One” packages include broadband plus mobile, sometimes offering a free mobile line for 12 months.

Spectrum Mobile focuses on delivering better value than standalone mobile plans, with simplified pricing and bundle discounts. Strategy of Spectrum Mobile centers on undercutting traditional wireless providers while increasing customer stickiness.
