Vodafone Spain buys 5G spectrum for $232 mn

Vodafone Spain has acquired 90 MHz of spectrum in the 3700 MHz band for 5G mobile data services in the Economic Ministry’s auction for €198.1 million or $232 million.

Vodafone said it will pay the spectrum fee in 20 equal annual installments at a 2.35 percent interest rate, the telecom operator said on Wednesday.

Vodafone Spain will use the 3700 MHz spectrum, which has a 20-year term, to deploy 5G services, enabling Gigabit speeds and lower latency to enhance applications including connected vehicles and robotics, industrial automated systems, and virtual and augmented reality.

Vodafone Spain said its service revenue reached €1.114 billion (–2.2 percent) in Q1 2018-19.

Vodafone Spain said it started growing its mobile contract base by 141,000, an improvement compared to the prior quarter. Vodafone Spain’s fixed and TV customer bases fell by 49,000 and 32,000, respectively.

Vodafone One, integrated fixed, mobile and TV service, reached 2.5 million households by the end of the quarter against 66,000 year-on-year.

Vodafone Spain said its 4G coverage reached 96 percent, while NGN footprint covered 20.9 million households.
