BT selects Ericsson as 5G RAN supplier, removing Huawei

BT has selected Ericsson as 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) supplier in the UK capitals London, Edinburgh, Belfast and Cardiff and other major cities.
Ericsson India 5G base stationBT earlier this year selected Ericsson to provide dual-mode 5G Core, making Ericsson the end-to-end 5G partner for BT. Once the deployment is completed, Ericsson will manage around 50 percent of BT’s 5G traffic.

Philip Jansen, CEO of BT, said: “We’re the UK leader in 5G and are excited to be working with Ericsson as a key partner to maintain that market leadership.”

The 5G network contract with Ericsson comes after the British government said in July it would ban China’s Huawei Technologies from any presence in the country’s 5G networks by the end of 2027.

BT signed a contract with Ericsson rival Nokia last month to provide 5G radio equipment for multiple towns and cities across Britain, as well as rural locations.
