5G performance and operator strategies in US

The latest Ookla report indicates that comparison of the performance of 5G across urban and rural areas in the U.S. highlights the different strategies adopted by major operators. T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon have all expanded their networks, but their approaches and outcomes vary significantly.

T-Mobile leads in both urban and rural 5G availability, with the highest percentage of users spending most of their time on its 5G network. The company’s aggressive deployment of its Extended Range 5G and Ultra Capacity 5G, combined with its acquisition of Sprint’s 2.5 GHz spectrum, has allowed it to establish a strong presence across the country. T-Mobile’s 5G expansion has been particularly successful in states like Florida, Illinois, and Nevada, where a high percentage of users have access to its network.

AT&T has leveraged its FirstNet network, originally designed for first responders, to expand its rural 5G coverage. The FirstNet buildout, completed in 2023, provided AT&T with a foundation for increasing 5G availability in remote areas. AT&T has also invested heavily in mid-band spectrum, further strengthening its urban and suburban 5G performance. The company has seen strong rural and urban adoption, particularly in states like Texas, California, and Florida.

Verizon’s 5G strategy has largely depended on its C-band spectrum deployment and the acquisition of regional carriers. While its initial reliance on Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) did not yield significant performance benefits, Verizon has since expanded its mid-band spectrum coverage to improve speeds and availability. Despite these efforts, Verizon has not matched T-Mobile and AT&T in rural 5G adoption, with its network expansion focusing more on suburban areas. The company’s spectrum acquisitions and planned investments indicate continued efforts to improve rural 5G coverage.

The analysis of 5G performance across different states confirms T-Mobile’s lead in both urban and rural markets, followed by AT&T and Verizon. While T-Mobile has achieved the highest overall 5G availability, AT&T’s FirstNet expansion has given it a competitive edge in rural areas.

Verizon, despite significant investments, still faces challenges in expanding its rural 5G reach. Looking ahead, all three operators will continue to invest in mid-band spectrum and infrastructure to enhance nationwide 5G connectivity.
