ZTE and Marvell showcase first ever 4G uplink Carrier Aggregation over TD LTE

Telecommunications equipment provider ZTE in association with Marvell Technology group is all set to showcase the world’s first 40 MHz uplink Carrier Aggregation (CA) over a TD-LTE network.

With a terminal device by Marvell, ZTE achieved a consistent uplink data rate of 90 Mbps using 0 system configuration ratio (uplink/downlink: 3/1) and 64QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) in the demonstration at the 10th Global TD-LTE Initiative (GTI) in Shanghai, China. The terminal provided by Marvell is the world’s first that supports uplink CA and 64QAM.

In a release ZTE said that the major challenge faced by TD-LTE operators was limited uplink throughput.

“The successful demonstration by ZTE and Marvell will help the industry overcome the limitation, enabling downlink CA to use the single- or dual-stream beamforming technology on multiple carriers to improve the performance of TD-LTE networks,” said company officials.

Carrier aggregation is a core technology for LTE-Advanced networks, enabling operators to combine multiple carriers at the same or different frequency bands into one transmission channel to take full advantage of limited frequency spectrums to multiplex a cell’s peak rate.

By the end of May 2014, ZTE has gained a total of 35 TD-LTE commercial contracts and cooperated with 66 operators in 40 countries to construct pilot and commercial TD-LTE networks. ZTE is one of the world’s top providers of 4G technology, establishing partnerships with telecommunications operators including China Mobile, CSL, Bharti Airtel, Hutchison H3G and Telenor.
