Airtel leads in 4G speed, but Jio scores in 4G availability

4G speed and availability - Opensignal

Airtel is rated as the top operator in terms of download speed experience, while Jio has been ranked no. 1 in terms of 4G availability, according to the latest report from Opensignal

With a score of 9.6 Mbps in download speed, Airtel is more than a megabit faster than its closest rivals Idea and Vodafone.

Conversely the users experienced the greatest improvements on Vodafone and Idea’s network, as their current overall scores grew by at least 2 Mbps — to reach 7.9 and 7.6 Mbps respectively — outpacing Jio’s download speed experience of 6.7 Mbps, which has increased by just 0.4 Mbps.

However, Jio has been ranked no. 1 in terms of 4G availability over the last six months with 97.8% score. The result indicates that mobile users, on average, were connected to 4G services on Jio’s network 97.8 percent of the time.

However, Airtel has shown the highest growth in terms of 4G availability, growing 3.6 percentage points to score 89.2 percent mark during the assessment period. This is significant compared to Jio’s score, which grew by just 0.3 percentage points.

On the other hand, the newly merged duo — Vodafone and Idea — both remained far behind in this race. While Vodafone’s score grew by a marginal 0.6 percentage points, Idea’s fell by more than four percentage points during the period.

Airtel also scored the highest in terms of video experience, with at least 5 points ahead of its rivals. With the rapidly increasing demand for video consumption through mobile devices, the video experience score has become increasingly relevant for operators.

The Opensignal report, which ranks leading operators in India, has named Vodafone as the winner of its new, first-of-its kind Voice App Experience award.

Three major operators Vodafone, Idea and Airtel earned Poor rating (66-74) in this category while BSNL landed with a Very Poor rating. With voice apps like WhatsApp, Skype, and Facebook Messenger becoming part of mainstream mobile communication, the rating in this category gains significance.

In terms of Voice Experience by network technology, Vodafone and Idea were the only operators to earn an Acceptable rating (75-80), in 4G Voice Experience measurements while Airtel and Jio were rated as Poor.

Airtel is ranked the top operators in terms of download speed experience, with a score of 9.6 Mbps, which was more than a megabit faster than its closest rivals Idea and Vodafone.
