Strong telecom policy in Thailand could increase mobile and fixed broadband penetration to 133 percent by 2020 from 52 percent in 2013, said GSMA.
This growth would lead to a cumulative GDP increase of $23 billion.
GSMA demands fair, transparent access to mobile spectrum by transitioning from a concession to a licensing regime. The telecom industry body wants the Thailand government to award available spectrum in the 900MHz and 1800MHz bands at the earliest to expand 3G and 4G mobile services.
The report said the globally harmonised 700MHz Digital Dividend band available to mobile will expand coverage in urban and currently underserved rural areas. GSMA wants the government to guarantee the independence of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission. The commission should be structurally and functionally separate from the government and operates with a clear mandate.
