Telenor India has deployed Huawei’s Lean GSM solution in 28 cities and achieved 85 percent dip in congestion and 20 percent increase in data throughput.

The investment in 28 cities — including Ahmedabad, Lucknow and Varanasi — is part of the network modernization program undertaken by Telenor in India. The global telecom aims to transform 25,000 site for mobile broadband transformation in its six circles.

Huawei’s Lean GSM solution improves the network capacity by over 30 percent using the same spectrum resources and provides better voice and data service. Telenor says this solution uses GPS-based synchronization and automated interference management based on real time network measurement. Telenor can use additional capacity in spectrum refarming for launching 4G LTE.

“The network modernization will help us achieve our vision of becoming a digital services provider. It will enable us to launch relevant services that will offer more value to our customers,” said Tanveer Mohammad, chief operating officer, Telenor India Communications.

Telenor India has swapped 5,000 sites with equipment in less than 90 days with an average 55 sites being swapped in a day. Telenor is now ready to deliver Internet to customers in its six operational circles. The company aims to complete the swap of its remaining sites by end of 2016.

“At the sites which have been migrated to Lean GSM, we have 85 percent less congestion and data throughput has gone up by over 20 percent. In addition, the new equipment is environment friendly as it consumes almost 30 percent less power,” said Tanveer.

The company aims to have 50 percent of its users accessing Internet by 2017 from 23 percent at present.

Zhang Jiayi, president at Huawei GSM Product Line, said Lean GSM is gateway to affordable mobile broadband.

Telenor has over 2,000 branded stores and more than 380,000 points of sale in six telecom circles in India.
