Telekom sets new world record in mobile radio speeds

Telekom has set a new world record in mobile radio technology, achieving a major milestone of 12 gigabits per second during tests conducted in Alzey.

This achievement is significant as it surpasses today’s 5G networks by a staggering twelvefold in mobile radio speeds.

Telekom achieved these unprecedented speeds by tapping into the relatively untapped 6 GHz frequency spectrum. This spectrum, not yet widely used in mobile communications, holds immense potential for the future of wireless connectivity.

At the upcoming World Radiocommunication Conference in November, the global tech community will discuss the possible integration of the 6 GHz spectrum into mobile networks. Telekom’s groundbreaking achievement is poised to shape this crucial conversation and could herald a new era of mobile connectivity worldwide.

Telekom’s new record is a major step toward addressing the ever-increasing need for faster and more robust mobile connections.

Abdu Mudesir, head of Technology at Telekom Deutschland, emphasized the importance of this achievement, stating, “The 6 GHz spectrum has the characteristic to meet the growing demand of our customers for more capacity and more speed.”

To achieve this incredible speed, Telekom combined a 6 GHz antenna with their existing 5G infrastructure, operating on the 3.6 GHz frequency band. The technique, known as “channel bundling” or “carrier aggregation,” yielded speeds up to 12.3 gigabits per second.

The 6 GHz frequency spectrum is ideally suited for providing rapid data transport, particularly in densely populated urban areas. Telekom’s tests in Alzey utilized a specific range within the 6 GHz spectrum, showcasing its potential to revolutionize mobile communications in urban environments.

This concept isn’t entirely new but is pivotal for the telecom industry. As telcos continue to modernize their networks, they will be integrating 6 GHz spectrum more widely, potentially leading to even faster smartphones and mobile devices.
