Orange tests Akamai CDN solution for video streaming

Orange
Akamai Technologies today announced — at the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2016) that it has completed proof-of-concept (PoC) testing at telecom network operator Orange.

Orange demonstrated the ability of Akamai’s Aura Virtualized Licensed CDN (vLCDN) solution, integrated with Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s (HPE) NFV Director 3.0 orchestration platform.

The test was to prove the ability to provide on-demand CDN scaling for live video streaming of popular events.

As networks increasingly are called upon to burst capacity in support of large events, it is critical to prove how CDN capacity can be deployed and scaled, in minutes instead of months,Akamai said in a press statement.

Leveraging Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), Akamai’s Aura vLCDN solution is designed to enable Network Service Providers (NSPs) to run CDN services on virtualized infrastructure.

“NFV and SDN has the potential to scale CDN flexibly and rapidly, which is critical in supporting high volume live-events in a cost effective manner,” said Dominique Delisle, program director for Content Delivery Network & Services Transformation, Orange.

According to Mick Scully, vice president and general manager, Carrier Products, Akamai, virtualization is playing a key role in CDN transformation by providing the foundation on which highly scalable operator CDN offerings can be built.
