Due to the Supreme Court order to cancel 2G licenses in 122 telecom circles,
the requests for mobile number portability (MNP) adoption have gone up to 4.32
million in February 2012 from 3.55 million requests in January 2012.
TRAI said mobile number portability (MNP) requests increased
from 32.79 million subscribers at the end of January 2012 to 37.11 million at
the end of February 2012. In the month of February 2012 alone, 4.32 million
requests have been made for MNP.
By the end of February 2012 about 37.11 million subscribers
have submitted their requests to different service providers for porting their
mobile number.
In MNP Zone-I (Northern & Western India) maximum number
of requests have been received in Gujarat (3.42 million) followed by Rajasthan
(3.26 million) whereas in MNP Zone-II (Southern & Eastern) maximum number
of requests have been received in Karnataka (3.94 million) followed by Andhra
Pradesh Service area (3.46 million). In the month of February 2012, total
number of subscribers who have submitted their request for MNP is 4.32 million.
TRAI said total wireless subscriber base increased from
903.73 million in January 2012 to 911.17 million at the end of February 2012, registering
a growth of 0.82 percent. The share of urban subscriber has marginally
decreased from 65.41 percent to 65.20
percent where as share of rural subscribers has marginally increased from 34.59 percent to
34.80 percent. The overall wireless Tele density in India reaches 75.42.

a joint venture between Unitech and Telenor of Norway; Loop
Telecom; Sistema Shyam a joint venture between Shyam and Sistema
of Russia; Etisalat DB; a joint venture between Swan and Etisalat of UAE;
S Tel, a part of Bahrain Telecom; Videocon; Tata Teleservices, a company
owned by DOCOMO of Japan and Tata group; and Idea Cellular, a company
owned by Birlas and the Axiata Malaysia.
