Syniverse, BICS, iBASIS Lead Global IPX Vendor Market as 5G, AI, IoT and Satellite Drive Roaming

The global IP Exchange (IPX) market is entering a new phase as telecom operators accelerate investments in 5G Standalone (SA), AI-powered network automation, IoT, eSIM and satellite-enabled connectivity.

IPX vendors are evolving beyond traditional international roaming to become strategic connectivity partners enabling secure communications between mobile operators, cloud platforms and enterprises.

Juniper Research ranked Syniverse as the world’s leading IPX provider, followed by BICS, iBASIS, T Wholesale, and Comfone.

The study evaluated 16 leading IPX vendors based on IPX traffic, global points of presence, mobile operator interconnections, analytics capabilities, automation and readiness for 5G Standalone roaming. The research identified Security Edge Protection Proxy (SEPP), AI-driven automation, analytics, regional traffic breakout and satellite interconnect as the key technology investments that will determine future market leadership.

The long-term opportunity continues to expand as GSMA Intelligence forecasts global 5G connections to reach approximately 5.5 billion by 2030, while licensed cellular IoT connections are expected to exceed 5 billion during the decade.

Syniverse expands leadership through scale, AI and 5G Standalone

Syniverse has secured the top position through its extensive global interconnection platform and continued investments in 5G Standalone roaming, AI-powered analytics and satellite connectivity. Its platform delivers more than 830 network connections, provides access to 97 percent of the world’s mobile devices, and connects 7.5 billion devices globally.

The company processes more than $35 billion in transactions annually, handles approximately 1 trillion roaming records every year, supports 690 global carriers, and is trusted by 59 percent of the market for data clearing. With more than 35 years of mobile connectivity experience, Syniverse strengthened its technology roadmap after securing $750 million in funding from Twilio in 2021. In March 2026, the company partnered with BICS to integrate their 5G Signaling Hub platforms, accelerating commercial deployment of secure 5G Standalone roaming while reducing deployment complexity for mobile operators.

BICS strengthens global roaming ecosystem

Second-ranked BICS continues investing in secure roaming, cloud-native signalling, fraud prevention and enterprise connectivity. The company provides connectivity to more than 5 billion subscribers across over 1,000 mobile destinations worldwide, making it one of the world’s largest international telecom connectivity providers.

Through its integration within Proximus Global, BICS now secures more than 180 billion digital transactions annually, reinforcing its position in international telecom infrastructure. The vendor is expanding enterprise IoT, authentication, international messaging and digital identity services while collaborating with Syniverse to accelerate SEPP-based 5G Standalone roaming.

iBASIS targets enterprise IoT and eSIM growth

Ranked third, iBASIS is strengthening its position through investments in international IoT connectivity, intelligent signalling, eSIM enablement and AI-driven network automation. The company is expanding automated provisioning, connectivity management and analytics to support enterprises deploying millions of connected devices globally. Its focus on eSIM technology enables remote connectivity provisioning without physical SIM replacement, positioning the company to benefit from the projected 5.5 billion 5G connections and more than 5 billion licensed cellular IoT connections expected by 2030.

T Wholesale and Comfone expand international IPX capabilities

T Wholesale, ranked fourth, benefits from the scale of Deutsche Telekom, which serves more than 250 million mobile subscribers across its global operations. Deutsche Telekom’s Germany business reported 74.49 million mobile customers, 15.10 million retail broadband lines, 21.0 million fiber-based lines, and 10.08 million wholesale lines at the end of 2025. The company invested €4.87 billion in cash Capex in Germany during 2025 to expand fiber and network infrastructure supporting wholesale, 5G and IPX services.

Comfone, ranked fifth, continues investing in roaming enablement, signalling, operational automation and connectivity management to simplify increasingly complex international roaming relationships. While the privately held company does not disclose subscriber or investment figures, it continues expanding its capabilities in 5G Standalone roaming, SEPP and enterprise connectivity.

Enterprise demand reshapes the IPX market

Juniper Research expects enterprise digital transformation to become the next major growth engine for IPX vendors. Connected vehicle deployments by BMW Group, Mercedes-Benz Group and Volkswagen Group, Industry 4.0 initiatives from Siemens, Bosch and Schneider Electric, logistics platforms operated by DHL Group, Maersk and FedEx, and connected healthcare solutions from GE HealthCare and Siemens Healthineers are increasing demand for secure, low-latency international connectivity.

Cloud providers including Microsoft, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud are also driving demand for IPX services as enterprises integrate mobile networks with cloud-native applications, AI workloads and edge computing infrastructure.

Tata Communications, Orange Wholesale and Sparkle intensify competition

Beyond the top five, Juniper Research also evaluated Tata Communications, Orange Wholesale, Sparkle, Telefónica Global Solutions, China Mobile International, and Vodafone Procure & Connect. These vendors are expanding investments in global backbone infrastructure, subsea cables, SD-WAN, IoT, cloud connectivity, cybersecurity and enterprise mobility to strengthen their positions in the rapidly evolving international connectivity market.

AI, SEPP and satellite connectivity define future competition

SEPP is a critical investment area as operators migrate from LTE roaming to cloud-native 5G Standalone architectures. The report also highlights regional traffic breakout, AI-driven traffic forecasting, intelligent routing, fraud detection, automated provisioning and service quality monitoring as essential capabilities for future IPX platforms.

Satellite connectivity is emerging as another strategic growth area as operators expand direct-to-device, maritime, emergency communications and rural broadband services. Vendors investing early in satellite interconnect are expected to become the secure bridge between terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks.

With 5.5 billion 5G connections and more than 5 billion licensed cellular IoT connections forecast by 2030, IPX vendors that combine secure 5G Standalone roaming, AI-powered automation, SEPP, IoT enablement and satellite connectivity are expected to lead the next generation of global telecom connectivity.
