Jim Whitehurst, president and CEO of Red Hat, has revealed at Mobile World Congress 2018 that why telecom operators are looking for open source software platforms.
The US-based open source technology company shared details why Japan’s NTT Docomo and ARSAT, a government-owned telco in Argentina, are using Red Hat.
Engineers at NTT Docomo are deploying Red Hat technology for software flexibility and increase in agility of services. The company adopted Red Hat OpenStack Platform as a virtualization infrastructure for providing the basis for new IT initiatives. Investment in Red Hat’s open source platforms has already assisted NTT Docomo to achieve decrease in its hardware footprint, cost reduction and improved service delivery speed.
ARSAT, an Argentine government-owned telco, provides datacenter and application services to the main government departments and public banks. Electronics engineers at ARSAT selected Red Hat Consulting to migrate from the Ceph community project to Red Hat Ceph Storage without any downtime. ARSAT migrated more than 95 percent of its applications within four days without customer disruption.
Red Hat CEO said OpenStack is a main technology for network functions virtualization (NFV), designed to provide telcos with better reliability and lower latency. Telecom engineers can rely on Red Hat OpenStack Platform to deliver a production-ready foundation to deploy, manage and scale a public or private cloud infrastructure.
Red Hat Ceph Storage provides a scalable software-defined storage platform that maps to the OpenStack scale-out architecture and integrates with its component services. Red Hat says traditional storage solutions may become a bottleneck for agile web-scale applications.
