Proximus reveals why it selected BroadForward

Proximus, Belgium’s leading mobile network operator, has announced a partnership with BroadForward and technology integrator Nomios to replace its legacy hardware-based Signaling Transfer Points (STPs) with BroadForward’s software-cloud-based STP solution.

This transition represents a significant step in Proximus’ network modernization efforts, ensuring that essential legacy services remain supported while also introducing future-ready capabilities that align with the evolving demands of the telecommunications industry.

STPs have traditionally served as a fundamental component of SS7 routing, facilitating crucial network functions such as roaming, messaging, IoT applications, VoLTE signaling, and emergency services. Despite the global phase-out of 3G networks, industry analysts predict that STPs will continue to be an essential part of telecom infrastructure for at least the next two decades.

However, traditional hardware-based STPs have reached the end of their operational lifecycle, making it necessary for telecom operators to adopt more flexible, scalable, and cost-effective alternatives to maintain network efficiency and prepare for next-generation connectivity.

BroadForward’s software-based STP solution offers a cutting-edge approach to signaling management, designed to operate seamlessly across multiple deployment environments, including bare metal servers, virtual machines, containerized environments, and cloud-based platforms.

Unlike legacy hardware solutions, BroadForward’s platform is built with flexibility in mind, allowing operators to reduce operational complexity, minimize costs, and eliminate reliance on outdated infrastructure.

In addition to supporting legacy SS7 signaling, the platform is engineered to evolve with network advancements, integrating 4G and 5G functionalities such as Diameter signaling control, signaling firewalls, and 5G SCP/SEPP capabilities. This ensures that Proximus can maintain robust legacy support while seamlessly adopting advanced technologies as part of its long-term network strategy.

Laurent Claus, Core & Communication Solutions Division Lead at Proximus, emphasized the importance of innovation in the company’s strategic vision, stating that the transition to BroadForward’s advanced signaling solution will future-proof Proximus’ network infrastructure.

He highlighted that the new platform not only guarantees continuity for legacy services but also simplifies operations and enhances Proximus’ ability to integrate next-generation 4G and 5G functionalities. Claus acknowledged BroadForward’s technology and Nomios’ expertise as key factors in ensuring a seamless transition that maintains the high reliability and service quality expected by Proximus customers.

Kris Verheye, Managing Director at Nomios, underscored the significance of combining tailored integration services with state-of-the-art technology to drive network innovation. He noted that Proximus’ adoption of BroadForward’s solution is an extension of the company’s ongoing partnership with Nomios, reinforcing the operator’s ability to address current challenges while positioning itself to capitalize on future opportunities in an increasingly digital and interconnected world.

Taco Schoute, CEO of BroadForward, addressed the limitations of legacy STPs, noting that while they have historically played a crucial role in telecommunications, their aging infrastructure has become a barrier in terms of cost and operational flexibility.

He emphasized that BroadForward’s software-based STP provides a sustainable, modern alternative designed to meet the evolving needs of network operators. Proximus’ decision to implement this platform highlights a broader industry trend towards adopting software-driven signaling solutions that enhance efficiency, scalability, and future-readiness.
