Nokia Networks assists WiMAX telecoms for TD-LTE Advanced migration

Telecom equipment vendor Nokia Networks today said its upgraded TD-LTE radios that will allow WiMAX operators to migrate their networks to TD-LTE Advanced.

The Finish company is enhancing its 1.9 GHz to 2.6 GHz and 2-pipe to 8-pipe TD-LTE radios with the 3.5 GHz carrier aggregation capable radio, and adding new TD-LTE-Advanced features that support WiMAX operators to migrate to TD-LTE Advanced.

Nokia Networks said its Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station for TDD and FDD will allow expansion with FDD-LTE for better capacity, coverage and roaming benefits.

“TD-LTE is now a globally deployed technology with a rich ecosystem, and its convergence with FDD-LTE makes it more attractive for many mobile operators,” said Zhang Qi, vice president of TD-LTE at Nokia Networks.

While using Nokia Networks’ Single RAN Advanced Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station for TDD and FDD, WiMAX operators can continue to utilize their existing telecom infrastructure investment in spectrum, backhaul, cabling, towers and energy.

Stephane Teral, principal analyst at Infonetics, said: “Given the significant progression of TD-LTE in the last few years, they are eager to upgrade their legacy network. Migration to TD-LTE will give WiMAX operators access to the LTE bandwagon and generate more revenues.”

A transition from WiMAX to TD-LTE-Advanced requires careful analysis of the operator’s infrastructure to guarantee improvement of service quality.
