T-Mobile US in association with Qualcomm Technologies and Alcatel-Lucent will deploy Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) as extension of LTE to unlicensed spectrum.

T-Mobile will be one of the first carriers to deploy LAA in 2016 — following its trials of LTE Advanced capability in 5GHz. Alcatel-Lucent will kick off trials this year with LTE-U enabled small cells using Qualcomm’s FSM99xx small cell system-on-chip (SoC) solutions.
Neville Ray, chief technology officer, T-Mobile, said: “The LAA ecosystem is coming together with innovative development from numerous partners to enable utilization of the 5GHz unlicensed bands.”
Alcatel-Lucent and Qualcomm will conduct LTE-U trials in the second half of this year using Alcatel-Lucent’s small cell portfolio based on Qualcomm Technologies’ FSM99xx family of small cell chipsets. Commercial products are scheduled for shipment in the first half of 2016.
